Educational information only — not veterinary medical advice. Always consult a licensed veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment.

The first year sets lifelong health habits: vaccines, parasite control, socialization, spay/neuter timing, and nutrition for growth.

Months 2–4

  • Vaccine series + deworming per vet
  • Begin positive potty and crate training
  • Safe socialization (people, surfaces, sounds — not unvetted dog parks)
  • Start nail handling and gentle mouth exams for future dental care

Months 4–12

  • Complete vaccine boosters and rabies
  • Discuss spay/neuter timing for breed/size
  • Transition to large-breed puppy food if applicable
  • Basic obedience: recall foundation, leash manners
  • First professional dental assessment around 1 year for many breeds

Common questions

When can puppies meet other dogs?
After your vet clears it — often partial socialization via puppy classes with vaccine requirements.
